5 Drum Recording Mistakes You NEED To STOP Making
MV2 hiss is unbearable
Hmm, I never had any issue with it adding noise. Maybe since it does upward compression, it's bring up noise that's already present in your track? Or maybe it's got a bug?
It sounds like from little transistor. Is it really good? Well not for me really sorry about it. It is not natural just like those telephones effect just ridiculous. Who want to listen over the telephone again not me.
As for if it's really good, it depends! As with most things, it's all context dependent. You're right, it's absolutely not natural sounding, but for certain styles of music, a natural sounding vocal would get completely buried and lost. This is definitely not a technique I would use for a track that called for natural, but for a track that needs something to cut through, this might do the trick.
The D6 and 602 is the best and those two together would make a deadly combo
Yeah, I would sometimes use the D6 in and the 602 out, it sounded great!
Love the tricks
Ha - ha
off topic, that room is beautiful
Thanks so much!
Great video man, really helping with choosing the right mics for my home studio
Glad I could help!
Is there any way I could see how to do this in TDR Nova? I'm new to this and am getting a bit confused with using the dynamic eq.
Yeah, I'm almost positive that this would work in Nova!
@@BetterMixes yeah i got it to work
@@tomn4483 Excellent!
Nah..
Haha oh. Very insightful.
Thanks for this. I produce everything in my small apartment and I feel like there's so little info out there about how to mix sampled instruments.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
Personally, I sounded much better than being in my closet than being in my room and even under a blanket. Plus, if you were to be outside my room, you could easily hear me sing. My closet however, when I close the door you can barely hear anything. This is just my experience though
While delay is very important as well, you did everything you could to make the reverb sound really bad... No predelay, no reverb ducking... Not a very good reverb for that vocal... Very bright, not EQ'd...and a really dense mix, rock song example! Even if you didn't want a reverb that you can really great as "reverb".... It's party of that server of space.... And not just because of the tail... I'm sort of misrepresented reverb in those video!
Yeah, this isn't exactly one of the videos I'm most proud of! I do still think this is a great technique to know, and it works quite well for some tracks, but yeah, for other tracks, reverb is 100% the vibe (or a combination of both!). I mean, I worked on a Lumineers record a while back; their vocals are absolutely swimming in reverb and it sounds amazing! I think back when I made this video, I was heavily influenced by and trying to emulate a few certain RUclipsrs who were always very definitive with "this is right, this is wrong". Nowadays, that kind of thing drives me nuts as I know nothing in audio is ever black and white. So yeah, if I saw this video today, I'd probably be yelling at me in the comments too 😆
My two favorite large diaphragm condenser mics under $500 (barely under) are the Roswell Mini K67x (the one with the transformer) and the SE Electronics SE4400 (not the 4400A). To awesome mics that that are great on just about everything and sound amazing.
I've been really curious about the Roswell stuff! Haven't gotten a chance to try one yet. And yeah, I've been impressed by every sE mic I've tried. Great value on those!
@@BetterMixes The K67x... It does not sound like a sub $500 mic at all, In my opinion... I like it more than the TLM 103.
The speaker is the biggest factor in what makes a tone because it’s a filter.
ts weird, the David Bendeth sample expansion pack for CLA drums uses an Ocheltree Snare for the "Paramore" sound of RIOT and its EXACTLY the same.... there's so many conflicting rumours on the production of that album but that snare sounds EXACTLY like it, and he'd know. Weird one.
Yeah, I don't know! It was on Gearspace that David and Dan Korneff said they used the Pearl Vinnie Paul snare for that song (as well as a Pork Pie brass and I think a DW for other songs on the album). In the actual track, they HEAVILY use a sample, so maybe the sample is of the Ocheltree snare and the live snare was the Vinnie Paul? Who knows!
Are they analog pedals though
Half of the ones I used here are analog 🤷♂
But there are also a ton of incredibly cool digital pedals too.
@@BetterMixes no I know but to me a digital pedal is essentially the equivalent to a plugin
@@prcption8636 Yeah, it essentially is, but what makes using pedals cool to me is just the hands-on nature of it. Twisting the knobs, even playing the pedal to the part. It's more like a plugin with a custom-made controller! Plus sometimes there's just a cool sound in one of your pedals that you can't get with the plugins you own.
@@BetterMixes this is a probably a big question but instead of buying DI box can I use the product called Eventide Mixlink pro to route audio through pedals and back into the box
The V13 has my vote I just think it captures some character in the singers voice the others didn’t
Could you make a video of what guitar cab and head is. I am trying to find examples on youtube but nothing I am so confused.
So the head is the actual amp. It's got all the tone controls as well as the actual power amplifier. The cab is the box that holds the speakers. And a combo amp would be both of those things together in a single box. I hope that helps!
Best side chain soothe2 tutorial I’ve seen
Thanks so much! Glad you liked it!
I'd love to see a shootout between the ls-308 and lauten's new tom mic (been looking and haven't seen one yet)
I'm hoping I can make that happen fairly soon!
When the U87 hit i realized why those mics carry such a high price
M160
I've used a Beta 57A, SM57, and Beyer M201 on everything. I think that classic 57 presence peak makes it very easy to set up (that signature "snap" on snare, "sizzle" on guitar amps), whereas the 57A or M201 need to be positioned with more regard for their proximity effect. On the Fender Deluxe, the 57A was flatter and gives you more to work with starting out, so I preferred it there. On the Mesa, I can hear a lower resonant peak in the 57A around 2khz or so, which is really irritating to deal with when mixing. All that said, I have had solid results throwing both mics on an amp at once.
I couldn't tell all that much difference between the amps but then again I damn sure ain't a pro. The cabs all clearly stood apart and it comes down to the ol' adage, name your poison...
Is this the gen2 or gen1?
This is the gen2. I also have a gen1, and they're very similar. I haven't done a direct side-by-side comparison yet (it's on my to-do list!), but they're close enough that I use them as a stereo pair all the time!
damn that josephson sounds nice
Yeah, they're seriously cool mics!
I don’t know it it’s the RUclips compression, or the iPhone 14 speakers, but I can’t hear $2 of difference between the different microphones.
you just saved my sanity… for the time being. Thanks for teaching a man to fish, brother
Hahaha glad I could help!
Oh no… I was doing some extreme experimenting with this… I saved what I did as a different session but now it is affecting the other session I have with same audio file…is there anyway to undo it effect?🤞
@@acceptyourself Hmm...that's strange. I'd need to do a little test for myself tomorrow to see if the pencil tool uses destructive editing. I've never really though about it because almost everything in Pro Tools is non-destructive and I only ever use the pencil tool to get rid of little clicks.
Where are the room mics located?
If I recall correctly, they were about 15 feet back from the kit, which would have been approximately in the middle of the room (with the drums pretty close to one of the walls).
Im hearing a slight trail of noise after your toms. Is that just the gate not completely removing the tails?
Yeah, I just don't have the gate set super tight, so you're hearing the cymbals and snare coming through. Or more specifically, it looks like I was using Oxford Drum Gate, so I probably had it set to have a really slow release for the mids and lows (and fast release for only the top end).
waves alternative - waves but the free ones.. wink jk, there's TONS of free stuff available and even stock plugins work wonders nowadays
There really are a lot of great free options (ESPECIALLY if you work in something other than Pro Tools. Still a handful of good free options, but less). And yeah, nothing wrong with stock plugins! One of the biggest records I worked on had a TON of stock plugins in those sessions and that didn't stop it from going triple platinum!
Are you doing any clipping or limiting on the drum tracks or drum bus to get more loudness or are you doing that in the master buss?
These days (and in this video) I typically only use limiting on the master buss. I used to do clipping on the drum buss, so that can totally work too, I've just been preferring it without lately. I will sometimes use a clipper on the snare to shave off the peaks a bit if I feel like it's hitting the drum buss compressor too hard though.
😂 💀💀 atm the ONLY thing that concerns me is getting these mother fucking vocals done without the neighbours reporting a domestic or complaining about noise. Idk if they sound a bit bad. I rather they get done and in a safe space like a closet where they hopefully can't be heard, than have 9+ tracks with no vocals because I can't practice, record or do anything to do with vocals in my house. So it's either closet or make my own vocal booth (which takes time and resources and money which we DO NOT have). It's amazing how people here act like we have a choice and fucking defecate money and can afford to just find ourselves a fancy area for vocals 💀
"It's amazing how people here act like we have a choice and fucking defecate money and can afford to just find ourselves a fancy area for vocals" I mean, I literally suggested you record your vocals in like...any other room. Say a bedroom, or a living room or whatever. Nothing fancy or expensive about that. And if YOUR closet is in a spot where it blocks enough noise from the neighbors to make recording possible, than that's where YOU should do it, but as general advice, a closet isn't necessarily going to provide any more soundproofing towards neighbors than any other room. I guess that all depends on the layout of people's houses/apartments. So without being able to see every viewers blueprints, I'd still say that as an overall statement, closets are a bad idea (with the caveat that your mileage may vary depending on your exact circumstances).
hell ya i can get rid of those goofy eqs on my bass and kick to try and get them out of each others way
Glad you found this useful! 🤘
Very cool. Thank you!
Glad you liked it!
u 67 is goat
If you ask me, it seems to think I want to make everything Loudness Wars competitive no matter which preset I choose. I got to where I avoided pushing the Gain to where it was suggesting just so I can have a Dynamic [aka not "Squashed" mix.] 😶
Hmmm...that seems strange. I'll have to take another look when I'm back in the studio on Monday, but typically for me, the lower range of the gain suggested settings is fairly quiet, and it's not until you get towards the top of that range (or set it to a louder preset) that things start getting up there.
I just ordered the u67 if I use the super silk on my mbt bus transformer it probably will sounds even smoother
Very cool! I love what the silk does on the RND stuff, so I bet that will be a killer combination!
@@BetterMixes Yes indeed I can’t wait
At first i would learn to tune a snare! This ist the worst sounding snare i've ever heard. So its totally worst to check a Mic on it...
Te closet solution covers a couple of vital everyday real life aspects, not considered here. As much as I would like to consider acoustics, recording my own voice in a closet with foam, is the only way of not getting angry neighbors at my door. A mic stand holding a heavy blanket would do the work? Also... Can't I hold the blankets on a pvc structure? Isn't it way cheaper? I praise the devotion for your trade, but I think there is a wide range of scenarios/budgets that are not taken in consideration. I'm sure you have the knowledge, and the will, to help us, cheap broken rats, with a more suitable solution, at least until we get back on our feet. Thanks!
You can absolutely use a PVC stand instead. I mentioned the mic stand thing because I figured a lot of people would already own an extra stand or two. And yeah, I mean, if the closet is the only space you functionally can record, do whatcha gotta do! If the extra walls of the closet blocks enough noise so you can record without your neighbors complaining, go for it! But I see so many people suggesting you record in a closet for acoustic reasons which, if you have almost any other option, is bad advice.
Great channel, but better watched with You Tube speed at 0.75 if you don't want to inherit the presenter's anxiety boost :)
Hahaha my bad! I typically watch RUclips on 2x speed, so I probably got used to that and talk too fast because of it!
My favorite was the Greenback honestly.
It's a killer speaker! Ive been using it a lot more lately.
Was saving money for amp now for a cab
Good move!
Is the Vanguard better then the Lauten LA320 in your opinion?
They're both fantastic mics, and I don't think you can go wrong with either. I use both regularly at my studio. The Vanguard has a little bit of that classic midrange push where as the Lauten has a more modern, relaxed midrange. I'll often use the Vanguard for folk or americana where that rich midrange compliments the style or even for more rock kind of stuff where the midrange push helps the vocal to cut through. I'll use the Lauten for poppier tracks where I want a little more of a clear sound, or it's great on singers who naturally have a lot of midrange in their voice as it helps to tame that a bit. That being said, if I didn't own both of them, either one could absolutely get the job done on most singers.
@@BetterMixes Thank you for your swift reply. Really apriciated. I want to use it for vocal recording mainly, Its in a home studio. I have a Mojave Fett 301 now but we are looking for a possible Tube mic to. If it is not to much asked. Could you take a listen to my voice and tell me wich of the Lauten or the Vanguard would fit better in your opinion . Just click on my profile picture. The song Rode Rozen was recorded at home with the Fett. That is kind of the style I am mostly singing and recording.
That snare sounds pretty dang close! Well done and good video. The only thing is the overtone (which there is a ton in the OG track too) sounds like a metal snare and the original snare used was the VP1480 which is a maple shell. I wonder how the overtone's characteristics would change given the difference in material. Either way, it blends well into the rest of the mix and doesn't sound as pingy as the solo'd track. Really informative stuff!
Thanks! Yeah, I wish I could get my hands on the Vinnie Paul snare, but (probably because of this record) they're INSANELY expensive for what they are. I originally tried my 14x7 oak snare thinking that would be the closest thing I have, but the oak just didn't have that ring. I thought about seeing if I could borrow a deep maple snare for this video, but my brass snare was sounding pretty darn close, so I figured I'd give it a shot!
Never was a fan of anything habing to do with Sam Pura. Hes a snob and his mixes are muddy
But his plugins are insane, especially the compressors
Can the delay effect only be panned right or left?
I would have to disagree with this. When they say closet, they mean walk-in closet. What you have is a like a reach-in closet that probably have sliding doors. A normal sized walk in closet surrounded with clothes would work better than room
Well, if they mean walk-in closet, word hasn't gotten around enough, cause I see people recording in normal (often smaller than my house's closets) all the time (probably because most people don't have massive walk in closets?). But yes, if you have a giant 10x10' or larger closet, than you could make that into a good booth. Anything much smaller than that, and you'd be a hundred times better off recording in a room with more space.
You do know you can Acoustically treat a closet just like you do any other room right
Not really. Due to all the corners in close proximity (and those corners' proximity to the singer/mic), the biggest acoustic issues in a closet are typically with the low end which is VERY difficult to treat properly (and takes a LOT of space to treat properly...space that doesn't exist in a closet). The larger the room, the less likely you are to have major low end issues so you can focus your treatment on the mids and highs (which are much easier to treat).
Seems like you are just hitting snare head. No rimshot. Is that right?
Nope, all rimshots here.
